If you’ve recently finished your orthodontic treatment and had your braces removed, you’re probably very excited to begin enjoying all the benefits of your newly straightened smile. However, before you celebrate too much, there’s one important next step that you don’t want to forget: you need to wear your retainer as instructed! But what exactly is the purpose of this device, and how are you supposed to keep up with caring for yours in the months and years following your orthodontic treatment? Here’s what you need to know.

What Exactly Is a Retainer?

A retainer is a custom-made appliance that helps keep your teeth in their new, corrected positions after treatment. Think of it as the key to protecting all of the hard work you and your orthodontist put into straightening your smile. Without a retainer, teeth can gradually shift back, undoing your progress!

Retainers come in different types. There are fixed retainers, which consist of thin wires that are attached to the back of your teeth to hold them in place, and there are also removable retainers, which tend to be more common. These are made of clear plastic or a combination of acrylic and wire, and are taken out whenever you brush your teeth, floss, or eat.

How Should I Care for My Retainer?

You can follow these tips to ensure that you’re caring for your retainer correctly:

  • Clean it daily – If you have a removable retainer, gently brush it daily with a soft-bristled toothbrush and mild soap or retainer cleaner. Don’t use bleach or mouthwash, and do not clean it while you’re wearing it.
  • Rinse before wearing – Always rinse your retainer with cool or room temperature water before putting it back in your mouth to help wash away debris and bacteria. You should also always rinse it before storing it.
  • Avoid losing or damaging it – Never expose your retainer to hot water or direct sunlight, since heat can warp its shape. Also, always keep it in its case when it isn’t being worn to ensure it doesn’t become lost or damaged.
  • Wear it as instructed – Your provider will let you know how often you should be wearing your retainer and when adjustments can be made. Don’t stray from their instructions.

Remember, your orthodontic journey doesn’t end when your braces come off—wearing your retainer is the last, and arguably the most important, step. By taking great care of this appliance, you’re setting your smile up for a very positive future!
